Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT)

About

Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), founded in 1920 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, is one of China’s most prestigious institutions, renowned for its strength in science and engineering. Designated as one of the country’s first six leading universities in 1954 and a founding member of the C9 League (China’s Ivy League), HIT has evolved into a comprehensive university that also encompasses management, liberal arts, economics, and law. Often referred to as “the cradle of engineers,” HIT has achieved numerous national firsts, including the establishment of China’s first School of Astronautics, the development of the country’s first arc- and spot-welding robots, and the launch of the first small satellites independently sent into the moon’s orbit. It was also the first Chinese university to develop a chess-playing, talking computer, reveal the virulent factor of the HIV virus, and carry out human–machine in-orbit maintenance experiments. The university currently comprises 23 schools offering 86 undergraduate programs and houses 9 National Key Disciplines, 12 National Key Laboratories, and 38 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. Eleven of HIT’s disciplines are ranked in the top 1% globally according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), with materials science and computer science in the top 0.1%, and engineering in the top 0.01%. In 2020, HIT was ranked 6th globally for engineering by the U.S. News & World Report. HIT also fosters a robust international environment, having signed cooperative agreements with 278 universities across 39 countries. With its main campus in Harbin and additional campuses in Weihai and Shenzhen, HIT operates under the model of “One University, Three Campuses” and is steadily advancing toward its goal of becoming a world-class university.
